We've got five years!

It’s hard to believe, but our Park Avenue shop has, as of today, been open for five years. On Christmas Eve 2006, we opened our doors to a small handful of customers that, through many growing pains, changes, and improvements, stuck with us and grew into the line-out-the-door family you see every morning and afternoon. We’re grateful to everyone that has bought so much as a mini-cookie at this shop, we’d be nothing without you, and you push us to be better.

And I don’t think it would be too much bragging to say that we have improved quite a bit in the last five years. There was a time before our latte art looked like anything particularly pretty. There was a time before single-origin, made-to-order coffee and multiple brew-methods. There was a time when most of our pastries came from outside vendors. What has allowed us to constantly make both slight improvements and wholesale changes (besides of course our wonderful, open-minded customers; I can’t suck up to you folks enough that it would exceed how appreciative we actually are) is a staff of baristas, managers, and chefs who work hard, work as a team, and push themselves to learn new skills and perfect old ones. We’ve had many employees come and go (such is the nature of service jobs in NYC), but if you’ve ever worked a shift at Gregorys, you’ve made a difference to us.

So thanks again (and again and again). Here’s to another five years in which we learn as many wonderful new things as we have in the first five.

Turkey-ish Coffee

If you’re in midtown in the next few days and need some coffee, all of our shops will run their usual hours on Wednesday and Friday, with the 44TH STREET SHOP heroically STAYING OPEN FROM 6AM to 3PM ON THANKSGIVING DAY. Whether you need some beans to counterbalance the tryptophan at home or a place to hang out and keep warm in Midtown, come on by.

In its second month of operation, our 46th Street kitchen is really hitting its stride and cranking out new deliciousness every day. Today, I wanted to highlight some of the new treats we’ve been gorging ourselves on in the past week alone. Pictured above, clockwise from the top left:

  • a) The huge new chocolate chip cookie. With no offense meant to our beloved mini-cookies, it’s just super soft and delicious.

  • b) Chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons. Their texture is almost as wonderful as their flavor, and they’re Gluten-Free!

  • c) We’ve had requests for an oatmeal cookie for years now, and we’ve finally found a recipe we love. It has the great flavor and texture you would expect from a freshly-baked oatmeal cookie with tangy, sweet cranberries thrown in.

  • d) I wandered into our kitchen and saw a deep fryer the other day and, to be honest, I was kind of hoping for chicken wings. Luckily, these glazed doughnuts are even better.

The kitchen is putting out new items faster than I can write about them and we’re suitably excited.

Our Film Club Selection for November is the dark, funny, and darkly funny The Man Who Wasn’t There by the Coen Brothers. It has the kind of black and white cinematography that makes cigarette smoke look downright spiritual and most other things somewhat creepy. We will be projecting it on a bedsheet as usual.

We had another in-house throwdown a week and change ago, and Jackie here overcame stiff competition from a few previous champs to reign supreme, notching a win for both Park Avenue and the Cape Cod side of our Cape Cod vs. Jersey Shore theme. Our homeboy Nick was on hand to take some pictures of the madness (madness, I tell you!), and you can check those out at his Flickr.

If you’ve walked into one of our shops today you’ve probably noticed what is the first major shakeup to our savory food offerings in a very long time. Sure, we’ve experimented with ingredients and flavor profiles, but the big sandwich/petite sandwich/salad trifecta hasn’t been messed with until now. As of today, we’ve consolidated all of our sandwich-making might into one size: the seven-inch-long baguette. We have a delicious, vegetarian apple and brie, we have a roast beef, cheddar, and tomato with horseradish mayo, and several old favorites have survived the transition as well.

We’ve transformed our salads from a chicken/grain based selection to an (oft-requested) tossed salad section. There will be many combinations of cheeses, meats, fruits, and vegetables for you to enjoy. Let us know what you think; we’re feeling optimistic.

Imagine our surprise and excitement upon hearing the other day that we were in the New York Times. Indeed, this article does feature a few mentions, and we’re quite happy to be included in the list of awesome shops expanding throughout New York City. It’s certainly an exciting time to be making coffee in the city.
