44th Street’s Ashley selected The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot as our next book club book and, trust me, it’s one you’ll want to read. In short: an African-American woman in 1950s Baltimore is diagnosed with cervical cancer and, unbeknownst to her or her family, her cells are used to kickstart the last half-century’s worth of cancer research. Skloot exploration of this event and its consequences (in terms of ethics, race, and history) is legitimately thrilling. Devour it this month and join us for a discussion at the Park Ave shop on Friday, October 24th.
